Edible Santa FeIn this show, America the Green talks about why buying local is not only good for our physical health but for the economic and environmental health of our community. Our guest is Kate Manchester, the Publisher of Edible Santa Fe, a publication promoting and celebrating local foods in Northern New Mexico. Kate is also the author of two books and was a private chef for Steven Spielberg, Martha Stewart, Tom Hanks, Donna Karan, Ed Bradley, director Bob Zemeckis, President and Mrs. Clinton and Vice President and Mrs. Gore.

TODAY’S ECO WAKE-UP CALL: In the U.S., the average grocery store’s produce travels nearly 1,500 miles between the farm where it was grown and your refrigerator. About 40% of our fruit is produced overseas and, even though broccoli is likely grown within 20 miles of the average American’s house, the broccoli we buy at the supermarket travels an average 1,800 miles to get there. In the podcast about Green Marketing you mentioned briefly thoughts about buying organic flowers. I am planning my wedding and have been considering it as something worth looking into. This brought me to a topic idea that I thought I could suggest for a show . . . Green Weddings. Tell me more about the organic flowers! Talk to me about paper choices for my invitations! Weddings are big business in our country and we brides want to make green choices. Help!

TODAY’S ECO WAKE-UP CALL: More than 19 billion catalogues are shipped yearly. After two years of lobbying from environmentalist group Forest Ethics, Victoria’s Secret, which mails on average 395 million catalogues a year, has agreed to use more recycled paper, reduce direct mail and conduct more efficient target mailings of other materials sent to customers. (Source: Women’s Wear Daily). So how come I just got five catalogues from them sent to me in the span of two weeks? – Carolyn

LOHAS and Victoria's Diret SecretIn this show, America the Green discusses the strength of the green demographic and how we can use our voice to really accelerate change. Our guest, Ted Ning, Executive Editor of the LOHAS Journal Publication and director of the LOHAS Conference, connects like minded businesses with each other to promote the health and sustainability market.

A FEW QUESTIONS WE ASKED:

So you talk to business everyday about sustainability, what do you think about what companies say — and what they actually do?

What does LOHAS stand for?

Who is the LOHAS consumer?

How are you using the voice of the 50 million LOHAS people to effect change?

What would you tell all the LOHASians listening to do about Victoria Secret and other catalogue companies out there that are contributing to the 19 billion catalogs mailed a year.

Closing Question: What one significant change do we a species need to shift towards to create permanent, positive change in our world?

Greg:
I just finished listening to your podcast on “Green Teens”. I am a proud
graduate of Unity College in Unity, ME. I think you might be interested in
some of the environmental activities that go on at Unity (www.unity.edu). A
good person to contact there would be Dr. Mic Womersley.
