In this show, America the Green talks about why buying local is not only good for our physical health but for the economic and environmental health of our community. Our guest is Kate Manchester, the Publisher of Edible Santa Fe, a publication promoting and celebrating local foods in Northern New Mexico. Kate is also the author of two books and was a private chef for Steven Spielberg, Martha Stewart, Tom Hanks, Donna Karan, Ed Bradley, director Bob Zemeckis, President and Mrs. Clinton and Vice President and Mrs. Gore.
TODAY’S ECO WAKE-UP CALL: In the U.S., the average grocery store’s produce travels nearly 1,500 miles between the farm where it was grown and your refrigerator. About 40% of our fruit is produced overseas and, even though broccoli is likely grown within 20 miles of the average American’s house, the broccoli we buy at the supermarket travels an average 1,800 miles to get there.
