South Dakota at 107 degrees. Monsoon-like flooding in the Northeast. The Greenland ice sheet melting twice as fast as five years ago. Mother Earth has started to speak out-and not so subtly. The question is: what can we do?
For communicators Irv Weinberg, John Biethan and Carolyn Parrs, the answer was simple: “America the Green”-a podcast they conceived right after viewing Al Gore’s film An Inconvenient Truth. “What’s needed are not just big solutions but many people doing small things that add up to big things,” says Weinberg. “When enough people reach a critical mass of consciousness and don’t leave it for the next guy or girl to do it for them, real change happens. It always does.”
Promoting real change is mission of America the Green. Within two weeks of America the Green’s launch, the podcast was picked up and featured by iTunes, and was off with flying colors (all green, of course).
Promoting real change is mission of America the Green. Each week from Santa Fe, New Mexico, the team speaks up and out with green business leaders, local community activists and forward thinkers from sea to shining sea in order create permanent, positive change through the greening of America.
The podcasts begin by alerting listeners with an eco wake-up call like: “The average person spends approximately 90% of their time indoors. According to the EPA, six out of ten homes are ’sick’. Meaning that they are hazardous to your health to live in.” Then with a mix of passion and humor, Parrs, Weinberg and Biethan discuss the problem and more importantly, real solutions, with an invited guest. “Be the change you want to see in the world,” is their motto, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi.
According to Carolyn Parrs, “Rarely does anything change from the top down. It all happens in the trenches. And that’s you and me and a million other Americans speaking out and making it happen in our own, unique way.”
