TODAY’S ECO WAKE-UP CALL: Eight hundred million people, most of whom live in the poor countries of the developing world, lack access to the food they need. The World Health Organization reported last year that undernourishment and malnutrition is the foremost cause of illness and death on the planet. In the United States, as many as 5,000 people die and 325,000 are hospitalized annually as a result of ingesting bacterial and viral pathogens, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With the rise in cancer and other diseases, you have to wonder about why this is the case. Obviously, there are way more packaged foods now than there used to be. Of course they are convenient and tasty, but they could be killing us. Thanks for making us more aware of this.
I am trying to eat more whole foods lately, but the cost for them is unreal. Our grocery bill has almost doubled. This makes it very difficult. It is evident that the packaged foods are priced much cheaper and more people will buy them.
